GPS Global Positioning System is well-known by most the people. The system has gained a footing in many different sectors – from cars and aeroplanes to the maritime world.

GPS is a system based on satellites, which can give an exact position all-over the World. The precision can be increased considerably by using a DGPS system. In the DGPS system, the GPS signal has been corrected by land based stations.

It is important not to mix up the systems we use in the professional maritime world with those used in yachting. A professional GPS has to be wheelmarked and go through several tests before it will be approved.
